It's that time. You're getting ready to list your house and you know you need to declutter. Photos need to be taken and boxes need to be packed. It can be hard knowing where to start when you have to cut the clutter, but worry not! Here are several things you can get rid of right now to start you on the right path.

1: Old Clothes

Whether they're clothes that don't fit you or clothes that don't fit your style, it is time to let them go. You can donate clothes to charity, sell them at a garage sale, or sell them online. Don't forget the old children's clothes if your kids have out-grown them.

2: Expired Items

All but the most organized of people usually have at least some expired food in their kitchen. It's time to throw it out and clear out the kitchen space. Remember to check the freezer too. Also, don't forget that medicine and makeup expire as well. Out with the old. The last thing you need is your teenager to try and make a sandwich with that tuna fish from 2007!

3: Documents You Can Find Online

This includes things like users manuals and even some books. Public domain books (Shakespeare, Tale of Two Cities, Pride and Prejudice, etc.) can be found and read for free online, so unless it's a collector's edition, you can let go of some of your books. Users manuals for just about everything can be found online, so there's no reason to keep the paper copies around (also, were you really planning on reading it?)

4: Dishes

You don't need twenty plates when you rarely have more than 7 people in your house at one time! If you have more people over, you're probably just going to use disposable dishes anyways. The same goes for cups and silverware.

5: Pens, Paint, and Papers

Get rid of the pens that don't work - there is no magic fairy that fixes broken pens (sorry, someone had to tell you). THrow out old paint can with colors you've long since painted over (lime green wasn't your best choice for the kitchen.) Old handouts, school notes, and other papers you never look over or use. If you feel like you really may need the info, take pictures or scan the documents and upload them onto your computer or cloud storage.

These are all just a start of course, but they'll set you well on your way to decluttering your house and getting you ready to move! In this exciting time of your life, don't forget to reach out to a real estate agent to help you through the process of selling your home.
